Villa am See

Individual ratings for Villa am See

Location
Idyllic lakefront setting directly on Lake Constance between Arbon and Rorschach in a park-like garden with old-growth trees.
Ambience
The place has a Mediterranean flair with its bucolic garden terrace among palms and citrus or in the quaint yellow room inside the 19th century mansion. The place will instantly make you feel at home, not least because you are so warmly cared for.
Infrastructure
The actual restaurant extends over two rooms in the classicist mansion, one being called "Yellow," the other "Orange." There is a glass pavilion in the garden, a secluded patio overlooking the lake, and ample parking out front.
Culinary
High-end fresh-market cuisine by Peter Runge. The servings are quite generous, and will fill everyone's bill. Be sure to sample the following: the hand-carved beef tartar, served with Pommery mustard ice-cream, sirloin cubes "à la Stroganoff" on a pleasantly spicy bell pepper sauce and fluffy potato mash, or a tender entrecôte of Canadian Heritage Angus beef.
Wine List
A fairly priced wine list, the focus being on Italian grapes. We had a sturdy Chardonnay from Planeta (Sicily) for CHF 63.00 the bottle. This is the lowest price for it we have seen in any of Switzerland's gourmet restaurants.
Service
Easy-going, cordial, and competent.

Villa am See Restaurant, Goldach

Sunny lakeside panorama: If you are planning a trip to Lake Constance, and eat very well, you should stop at the "Villa am See." The view from the restaurants garden terrace alone is worth the trip. That said, you just want to miss out on the fine cooking of Peter Runge either. His is a straight-forward, market-fresh cuisine of uncompromising quality. He uses exclusively fresh catch from Lake Constance, and carefully selected, wild-caught seafood. The barbecue sees only beef from free-range stock – specifically Heritage Angus beef sourced from Christoph Weder in Canada. The taste will persuade your palate without even trying. We were persuaded not only by the beef, but also by the sunny interior of the dapper yellow mansion. Even in typically grey Swiss weather, the restaurant whitewashed in yellow will be a bright ray of sunshine. Closed on: Monday and Tuesday
Price range €€
It is like dining by the ocean – but lovelier and better.
The airy glass pavilion in the garden would actually qualify as nice alternative for the time between seasons, if its Romantic ambience was not disrupted by the noisy whirring of the dishwasher.
