Gasthaus zum Gupf

Individual ratings for Gasthaus zum Gupf

Location
On a sunny plateau high above the village Rehetobel, with breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view. F1 champion Michael Schumacher was so enchanted by this estate that we tried to buy it. Luckily, it was not for sale!
Ambience
An entirely welcoming, ultra-comfy location with quaint Appenzell house.
Infrastructure
3 rustic but noble dining rooms, smokers' lounge, idyllic garden, 8 small rooms and 2 suites, sun deck with lounge chairs, and heliport.
Culinary
Local gourmet cuisine with Mediterranean and Asian accents. Walter Klose uses high-end regional products, such as meat from the estate's own stock, to prepare creative dishes with no frills. Our favourites: Carpaccio of Gupf beef, lobster salad with Thai mango and oven-baked suckling pig, served with fluffy potato dumpling fingers.
Wine List
Spectacular vaulted wine cellar, with around 30,000 bottles in stock. Highlight of the cellar is a record-breaking bottle: 480 litres of Kracher Trockenbeerenauslese Nouvelle Vague Grand Cuvée no. 7 of the 2005 vintage. This special bottle made for Gupf entered the 201 Guinness Book of Records.
Service
Warm, welcoming, attentive, and very personal.

Gasthaus zum Gupf Restaurant, Rehetobel

Like a well-kept secret, the restaurant "Gasthof zum Gupf" lies at an elevation of 1,083 m above sea level on a hilltop in the Appenzellerland. You will look in vain for a sign directing you to this venue. This is a place that wants to be discovered. Your gaze will sweep the valley for miles: Lake Constance is right in front of you, with the Appenzell Alps on the other sides. This grand picture alone would be worth the trip. Then again, the picturesque Appenzell house awaits you with the honest down-to-earth gourmet cuisine of Walter Klose (whose accolades include one Michelin star). Another ace-up-the-sleeve are the impressive vine vaults. Aside from an uninterrupted collection of Mouton-Rothschilds of the years 1940 through 2007, you will find a sheer incredible stock of wines from the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti here. You will count among the truly privileged guests if you get to climb the stairs after a lavish supper. There are only 10 rooms (our favourite one being the Alpstein suite), and the beds are so comfy you will sleep better than you have in weeks. Closed on: Monday and Tuesday
Price range €€
Coming awake in the morning to the sound of cow bells and the scent of fresh-baked rolls and coffee, complemented by the grandiose view of the Appenzell scenery from the window of the Alpstein Suite: simply delightful!
In order to get a table and room her on weekends you need to book far in advance.
