L'Andana Hotel, Castiglione della Pescaia

The hotel takes its name from Tuscany's picturesque, straight tree-lined roads. L'Andana is the Tuscan word for roads flanked by tree lines alternating between cypresses and stone pines. Just riding up the 800-metre driveway to the hotel will fill you with pleasant anticipation. And indeed you will have a most wonderful time at this former hunting lodge of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Leopold II of Lorraine. The property sits amid a sprawling country estate extending over 500 hectares of countryside. Your eyes roam gently rolling hills and will behold the sea in the distance. For Vittorio Moretti, proprietor of the renowned vineyards "Bellavista" and "Petra" as well as of the luxury hotel L'Albereta in Franciacorta, seeing this landscape was a case of love at first sight. Having acquired the estate, he commissioned his son-in-law, Martino de Rosa, to open the first 5-star country hotel in the Maremma region. No lesser than Alain Ducasse was called in as partner. Ettore Mocchetti, the editor-in-chief of the Italian edition of "AD," was contracted to mastermind the interior fit-out work. The outcome of the French-Italian partnership is impressive, having produced a unique country hotel full of character and style.

An excellent breakfast is served here that leaves nothing to be desired! Fresh-baked bread, home-made yoghurt and jam – all of it in the walk-in kitchen, lovingly arranged.
Dozens of swallow nests beneath the roof are home to countless swallows that get busy at the crack of dawn and make it virtually impossible to sleep in.
