Four Seasons Firenze Hotel, Firenze

An urban oasis with a special touch. The Renaissance palace "Palazzo della Gherardesca," the 16th-century convent as well as the former stables underwent a costly restoration that took seven years to complete. Now, the splendour and genteelness of the times of the Medici has been revived, down to the least details. In 2008, the Canadian hotel group Four Seasons reopened three buildings as five-star luxury hotel. You will be stunned by the majestic parlours with ceiling six metres tall and ornamented by breathtaking frescoes, a chapel, choice antiques, highly original rooms, and attentive staff. The grounds outside consist of vast parklands. The big city bustle and street noise seem miles away.
Price range €€€
The unique private park with its old-growth trees, pond, pool, and spa building seriously rivals the appeal of Michelangelo's David in the nearby "Galleria dell'Accademia." We succumbed to the temptation and postponed our trip to the museum until we return to Florence.
The pretty sand-stone pool tends to be commandeered by children on summer days. So if you want to swim a few quiet laps, you are well advised to get an early start.
