The Connaught Hotel, London

"Placere Placet" – "The pleasure to please." This is the hotel's motto: Having read it for the first time in the lift, you will see it again in your bedroom and bathroom, and eventually find it embroidered onto your bathroom slippers even. What truly impressed us, though, was the fact that the hotel staff actually work and live by this tenet. Nothing is ever too much for the them, they almost seem to divine your next craving just by looking at you. The hotel's concierge is a model of efficiency, while the Connaught butler service included in the room rate is decidedly solicitous and swift. By the second day of our stay, we found our favourite fruit in the room, a cigar ashtray on our private terrace, an ironed evening gown in the wardrobe, and our freshly shined shoes gift-wrapped in a shoe box specially designed for the hotel just outside our room. We were enchanted not just by the personalised service but also by Hélène Darroze's deliciously creative cuisine, by the Martini cocktails which were mixed on the Connaught Bar's trolley right at our table, and by the exquisite massages at the hotel's Aman Spa. It requires quite some effort to make a move, leave the hotel, and do what you probably meant to do: explore London.

It's an absolute treat to sit in the brightly day-lit "Espelette" dining room with its sweeping view of Mount Street, and to enjoy the sophisticated finger sandwiches filled with foie gras or salmon and wasabi. The fluffy scones fresh from the oven are served with jams made by Christine Ferber, the queen of jams. The macarons as well as the miniature Bûche de Noël have been designed by Michelin star winning chef Hélène Darroze. The finest afternoon tea in town!
The maze-like network of corridors can be confusing. Depending on which room you are staying in, you will have to pass through endless hotel corridors to get to the spa or the restaurant.
