La Mirande Hotel, Avignon

The Hotel La Mirande in its radiant ochre exterior rivals the splendour of the papal palace. The origins of the magnificent building go back to a mansion that Cardinal Arnaud de Pellegrue, a nephew of Pope Clément\_V, had built in the early 14th century. It did not get its present appearance until 1688, when the famous architect Pierre Mignard created the baroque palace with its striking sandstone façade. Parlours and rooms have amazingly high ceilings, and radiate the elegance and opulence of the Ancien Régime. Antique parquetry and splendid tiles decorate the floors, while the walls are covered in patterned wallpapers and original 18th-century fabric reedited by Braquenié, Le Manach and Rubelli. Hand-picked antiques and paintings – lovingly collected by the current owners, the Stein family – lend the rooms their unmistakeable character and grandeur. Staying here is like time travelling. It pays to get an early start and to be among the day’s first visitors to discover the papal palace across from the hotel before the tourist crowd arrives.

Location is everything! It does not get any more central in Avignon than this place – directly across from the Palace of the Popes. Out of a total of 27 rooms, 21 overlook the crenellations of the papal palace.
The interior decoration could conceivably prove too much of a good thing for younger guests.
