Individual ratings for Hotel des Berges

Location
Located halfway between Colmar and Sélestat right on the river bank of the Ill, embedded in a well-groomed garden.
Ambience
Comfortable boutique hotel in the style of a tobacco barn. Architect Yves Boucharlat let his work to be inspired by local legacy of being part of a former tobacco-growing region. Cuban sounds waft through the rooms, and sitting at the opulent bar decorated in tobacco colours you will feel as if you were in Havana proper.
Infrastructure
A bar with fireplace, breakfast room, cosy lounge on the river bank beneath a weeping willow, a small spa including sauna, steam room, hot tub and treatment rooms. Canoes and bicycles are available for hire.
Culinary

An excellent breakfast is served here that leaves nothing to be desired! Every morning, Christophe Fischer, the chef-patissier of the "Auberge de l’Ill," prepares the hotel's pastries for the day. The legendary two-star restaurant is located in the building next door. (Please read our separate review of the restaurant elsewhere on the Pillow & Pepper homepage)

Rooms
There are 13 very bespoke rooms and imaginative suites, decorated in the Havana style. Another 5 junior suites were recently created in the spa building. All of the rooms and suites done in warm hues, making copious use of timber and rare textiles, with most units featuring a balcony and a picturesque view of river and garden. Bathrooms are stocked with Hermès bath amenities.
Service
Marked by natural warmth. Solicitous and attentive without being pushy, hosts Danielle and Marco Baumann-Haeberlin and their team take great care of their guests. Shoe shine service, car wash, a boat trip along the river Ill – there are few things indeed they won't organise for you promptly.

Hotel des Berges Hotel, Illhaeusern

A far cry from any Alsatian cliché, the "Hotel des Berges" in the hamlet of Illhäusern is a pleasant and tasteful alternative to colourful half-timbered houses and their cheesy doll house ambiance. Gourmets have come to Illhäusern for decades. Their destination: the "Auberge de l'Ill". The traditional gourmet restaurant run by the Haeberlin family has retained Michelin stars since 1967 and is famous well beyond the border. In an annex, Danielle Haeberlin runs a small and elegant boutique hotel together with her husband Marco Baumann. The romantic lounge right on the river bank is a great place to get in the mood for a dinner at the "Auberge de l'Ill." Having enjoyed Marc Haeberlin's culinary fireworks, the lounge is also perfect for reflecting upon the many highlights just experienced over a leisurely cigar. At some point, you ascend the stairs, rest your head in your comfy bed in one of the 18 rooms and dream of "Prince Vladimir" and his lobster. An elegant temporary home for gourmets, cigar aficionados, or indeed anyone in search for that extraordinary experience.

We very much appreciate the fine breakfast here. It is up to the guests to say when and where to have it. How about eating in the secluded garden amid quacking duck families and strutting storks? Or rather on a boat deck on the river Ill?
The bathrooms in the main building are getting on in years.
