Individual ratings for La Colombe d'Or

Location
Located directly by the entrance to the historic town centre of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, to the left of Place du Général De Gaulle – the meeting place of Pétanque players of all ages.
Ambience
The phenomenal appeal of "La Colombe d'Or" then as now is its ambience – its awesome art collection and its picturesque garden puts it in a class of its own.
Infrastructure
The restaurant extends over two dining rooms. Large patio fringed by fig trees, scenic garden with pool, 25 rustic rooms and apartments, valet parking.
Culinary
Small, masterfully designed menu with down-to-earth French classics without frills. Be sure to try: Snails with ratatouille, poultry fricassee, and the soufflé au Grand Marnier (only served in at supper time).
Wine List
The wine cellar is not what you come here for, and so the wine list is quite modest.
Service
In addition to locals and celebrities, the restaurant is also frequented by large numbers of tourists who like to sneak a free look at the paintings without actually eating here, which explains the stiff, almost inhospitable attitude initially displayed by the staff.

La Colombe d'Or Restaurant, Saint-Paul-de-Vence

"La Colombe d’Or" ("the golden dove") is legendary, and counts among the most famous restaurants anywhere along the Côte d’Azur. Marc Chagall, Sophia Loren, Alain Delon, Yves Montand – they all stayed or dined here. Many an artist paid for his fare or lodgings at "La Colombe d'Or" with one of his pieces. Greater masters of modernism, including for instance Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso, bequeathed substantial art collections to the owners, the Roux family. And so you sit beneath an original painting by Henri Matisse, or by Fernand Leger or Jacques Villon while savouring a dish of escargot or gilt-head bream, watch the lively goings-on, and travel back in time. It is the place to be for lovers of the fine arts, but also for those who simply like the ambience they create. Open daily during lunch and dinner hours. Annual closedown between early November and mid-December.
Price range €€
Dining with Picasso! The awesome art collection is world-class, and bears comparison with any museum. If for some reason you don't make it to Fondation Maeght, reserve a table here (well in advance) and combine the beaux arts with culinary art.
As with many places on the Côte d'Azur, Saint-Paul-de-Vence is inundated with strangers during the high season. The share of tourists dining at the "La Colombe d'Or" is unmistakeably near 80 percent.
