Hotel de Rome Hotel, Berlin

You'd be hard pressed to find another spot in Berlin where culture and barbarism contrast as starkly as on Bebelplatz with its beautiful architecture, on the one hand, and its memorial to the 1933 book burning, on the other. The square itself, a listed national heritage, is framed by classic architectural gems and counts among Berlin's most popular sights. At the far end of it and impossible to overlook lies the five-star luxury Hotel de Rome in a building that was once the head office of Dresdner Bank. The interior is an accomplished blend of German architecture, English comfort, and Italian design, bearing the signature touch of Olga Polizzi and Tommaso Ziffer. The former bank directors' offices on the Bel Etage now host the hotel's historic suites and rooms. Take a seat beneath the elegant Opera Court's 5-metre plaster ceiling and treat yourself to the city's finest afternoon tea. Alternatively, sink back into one of the cosy outdoor sofas in the lounge of the rooftop terrace, pick up a copy of Erich Kästner's classic "Emil and the Detectives" which is set in this city, and just take it easy. This must surely be the most pleasant place to stay in Berlin-Mitte!
Price range €€
The former vault of the Dresdner Bank was transformed into an indoor pool. What could be more enjoyable than doing your laps in a 20-metre long pool after a day of sightseeing and shopping?
Quite a number of the 145 rooms overlook one of the four rather drab inner courtyards.
