Villa Bordoni Hotel, Greve in Chianti

It was in the winter of 2002 that the couple Catherine and David Gardner, gastronomists from Scotland, discovered the dilapidated 16th century mansion. After a full-scale redevelopment that took years, they reopened Villa Bordoni as a romantically styled hideaway in 2006. Here, above Greve in Chianti, the Gardners created a total work of art without doing harm to the patina of the past. What defines the distinctive character of the small boutique hotel are its charming cheeky details like the façade's soft-blue whitewash, the open-air gym beneath the pergola, the verdant shower by the pool, the bathrooms with their hand-painted, antique tiles from the Amalfi Coast, or the flat-screen TVs, hidden in gilt-framed mirrors. The kitchen plays an important role. It is definitely a good idea to stay for dinner or indeed to take a cooking class. Villa Bordoni makes a refreshing difference from the run-of-the-mill rustic hotels in the Chianti region.
Price range €€
An overwhelming love for detail! A true paradise for interior-design buffs and those who love today's country cottage style.
It needs a bit of practice to negotiate the recklessly steep gravel driveway to the hotel with its many potholes. You better leave your sports car at home.
