Individual ratings for Borgo Pignano

Location
Stand-alone, in the middle of the Tenuta Borgo Pignano farm of 750 hectares, in a wildly romantic landscape, with a magnificent panoramic view of Volterra and the Val d'Elsa (Elsa valley). The drive to Volterra takes 18 minutes, and San Gimignano is 25 minutes away.
Ambience
The medieval hamlet has a charm and appeal that is virtually impossible to resist. Everything you see here is the real thing, and backed by a philosophy of sustainability – including the frescoes on ceilings and walls, the furniture and the hand-crafted soaps made with lavender from the garden outside.
Infrastructure
Gourmet restaurant, barbecue restaurant, bar, library with fireplace, billiard room, 2 pools, gym, yoga and meditation room, spa (opening in spring 2017), riding stable, cooking school, painting studio, complimentary use of bicycles, vegetable garden, and a proprietary biodynamic farm.
Culinary
Lovingly arranged breakfast buffet with homemade honey from the garden and hand-made bread; at dinner time, a creative and ambitious fresh-market cuisine is served. The dishes use organic vegetables, herbs and fruit biodynamically farmed on the estate.
Rooms
7 tastefully decorated rooms and 7 classically elegant suites with fresco-ornamented ceilings in the villa, 2 new suites in the "Canonica" cottage, formerly the priest's house, 5 generous split-level apartments (maisonettes) inside the "Borgo" and 3 charming cottages spread around the estate. All of the rooms and apartments come with modern bathrooms, comfortable beds, and are furnished in antiques. There are no TV sets, safes and mini-bars in the rooms, but you may request a TV in your room, and the room service will bring you any beverage you fancy. Complimentary filtered spring water and WiFi.
Service
The genial warmth of the staff will draw you in. Good cheer prevails throughout the hotel.

Borgo Pignano Hotel, Volterra

The ancient walls of this place, which date back to the 13th century, radiate an atmosphere that no luxury in the world could rival. It is as if the buildings themselves emanated a serenity and tranquillity, which is hardly surprising when you consider how many events and people these edifices have seen. Today, the far-flung hamlet is a hotel complete with its own farming operation. The guest rooms and holiday apartments are spread across several buildings, and radiate a well-appointed rustic atmosphere. The hotel offers a rich program of activities, ranging from cooking and bread-baking classes, to yoga and pilates sessions, and all the way to horseback riding. The Borgo Pignano is the perfect place for coming to your senses in a setting of unspoilt nature, be it by yourself, with your partner or your family.
Price range €€
No matter where you turn in this place, you will always behold a picture-book version of Tuscany. The spectacular view from the infinity pool extends across the rolling hills and the city of Volterra all the way to the sea, and is in itself worth a stay.
The two cottages (La Fonte and Casa del Lago) are 300 metres away from the restaurant and the new spa. If you prefer short distances you should book a room in the villa or a suite in the priest's house.
