The Ashbee Hotel, Taormina

As lovely as Taormina is, it gets lovelier yet in at night when the all the tourist coaches have gone, and the place belongs to those who are staying the night. A particularly stylish place to stay is the intimate 5-star hotel The Ashbee on the edge of the pedestrian zone. The patrician mansion, built by the English architect Charles Robert Ashbee in 1908, was refurbished at great cost over several years. The impressive stairwell of red marble, the large fireplace in the lobby, and the marvellous terraced garden with its old-growth trees bring back to mind the grandeur of bygone times. A romantic retreat for travellers of refined taste, and those who appreciate the blend of historic mansion and modern lifestyle.
Price range €€
As soon as you enter the premises through the gate, the beguiling scent of jasmine fills the air. The terrific landscaped grounds, which are hidden from outside view, represent a sanctuary in Taormina, which tends to be overrun by tourists.
Only three of the 25 rooms have a nice view of the sea, whereas the others are either overlooking the garden or the adjacent church.
