Cavalieri Hotel, Siracusa

Syracuse feels like a piece of Greece on the east coast of Sicily. In antiquity, Syracuse was the largest and most powerful city in Sicily for centuries, and its cultural centre. The Greek theatre and the crumbling baroque façades are testimony to the former splendour. The finest squares and chalk-white palazzi are found in the old part of Syracuse – on the island of Ortigia. Just a five-minute walk from the picturesque island lies the owner-operated boutique hotel Cavalieri – the perfect starting point to go exploring the city's rich history and culture. Up to the 1930s, the patrician building served as maternity hospital. In the year 2000, the architect Gianluca Lo Manto bought the palazzo and spent several years redeveloping it from the bottom up. In 2007, the house reopened as a 4-star superior hotel. The palazzo is entered via the spacious atrium. Its 20 rooms are decorated in tasteful simplicity. The large rooftop patio commands a great view of Ortigia and the sea. An inviting homogeneous whole marked by Mediterranean serenity and genial Sicilian hospitality.
