Location

The "Don Alfonso 1890" is located in the hamlet of Sant' Agata sui due Golfi between Sorrento and Positano.

Ambience

It is stimulating and buoyant place. The restaurant is decorated in the colours white and pink, while the walls are – somewhat unexpectedly – hung with Russian impressionist paintings. During the warmer months, you may dine on the beautiful patio laid in 200 year old maiolika tiles.

Infrastructure

All ingredients for a culinary event are in place: a sensuous restaurant, a huge wine cellar (complemented by a cheese maturing room at the end of the tunnel), a cooking academy, a patio, a smoking room, 9 rooms and suites, and a garden with a heated pool.

Culinary

Creative Mediterranean cuisines with fresh products from the restaurant's own produce area "La Peracciole." Senior Chef Alfonso recently passed the kitchen on to his son Ernesto, who was chafing at the bit to continue the grand legacy. The cuisine is currently decorated with two Michelin stars.

Wine List

The wine cellar with its long tunnel and its stock of about 25,000 bottles is just as impressive as the wine menu listing around 1,200 vintages. There is a fine selection of rare Bordeaux wines, such as Château Cheval Blanc.

Service

Truly Italian and truly sanguine hospitality: After Ernesto proudly showed us his kitchen, his brother took us on a tour of the freshly refurbished rooms, and their mother Livia talks to us with dreamy eyes of ripe lemons and the various vegetables they grow on their own nearby farm.

The "Don Alfonso 1890" was opened by Costanzo Iaccarino, the Grandfather of today's owner Alfonso, in 1890. Today, the restaurant is a show-piece of southern Italian cuisine, and well known far beyond the country's borders. The renowned restaurant is located in a recently refurbished, terracotta-coloured palace dating back to the 19th century. All of the rooms are decorated in bold colours. In addition to eating very well here, you may also spend the night in style. Nine rooms and suites done in refreshing hues of lilac, pink, rosé and yellow. The previous fabric is imprinted with a pattern of macarons and tartlets. So, rather than just having fine food at "Don Alfonso 1890," you may stay and dream about it, too. A must-have for gourmets and definitely worth a detour.

Top Flop

If you do not feel like driving back to wherever you are staying after a sumptuous supper, just go upstairs and stay in one of the nine rooms, getting you best sleep in weeks in a very comfy bed. The most romantic of the rooms is the "Maggiorana" of the separate cabin "Casa del Poeta."

Remember: Going back down to Sorrento or Positano after many a cup of wine, you will get the feeling the switchbacks will never end.
