Bulgari Hotel London Hotel, London

Opened in 2012, this 5-star boutique hotel in Knightsbridge brilliantly pays homage to the silversmith origins of the Rome-based jewellery business of Bulgari. In fact, "silver" dominates the entire building like an elegant theme and runs through the contemporary Italian interior with its playful use of colours, pairing silver and other precious materials with hues of black and grey: black granite and sapele mahogany in the common part areas, heavy damask silk curtains in the rooms, and Nero Marquina marble in the bathrooms. Every detail has been created with painstaking care. Everything from the door handles to the façade, to the vintage trunks that house mini-bar and coffee machine in the rooms, and all the way to the desk-top accessories, bears the handwriting of interior designers Antonio Citterio and Patricia Viel. And everything has the charm of the extraordinary. A perfect temporary home for design lovers and fashionistas. Harvey Nichols and Harrods are right around the corner, as are the flagship stores on Sloane Street. So it's "shop till you drop" – into your divinely comfortable bed.

The spa area counts among the finest found in London's hospitality sector. After swimming a few laps in the 25-metre pool (the largest in the city), you may recline in one of the poolside cabanas to recover from a strenuous day in town. It is a favoured spot that those who occupy it are loath to relinquish.
The rooms and suites look out on the commercial buildings across the street.
