Individual ratings for Le Moulin du Roc

Location
Scenic location on the bank of the Dronne River on the edge of Périgord-Limousin National Park, and off the beaten track.
Ambience
Charming, romantic and decidedly cosy.
Infrastructure
Restaurant, boutique, beautiful garden with heated outdoor pool, pool building (with changing rooms and shower) and tennis court. Things to do in the immediate vicinity: Fly fishing and kayaking.
Culinary
Classically French: The menu lists the usual classics, such as foie gras, along with regional specialities generously topped with grated Périgord truffles. The restaurant has borne the accolade of one Michelin star since 1979.
Rooms
15 rustic-elegant rooms spread across three buildings, connected to one another by narrow footbridges and a whole maze of stairs and hidden nooks. The rooms we liked best are the ones overlooking the river. Each room is distinct in its interior design, and all are furnished with antiques. Bathrooms are stocked with Hermès bath amenities.
Service
Warm, cheerful and efficient.

Le Moulin du Roc Hotel, Champagnac-de-Belair

Delightful imperfection! There are hotels in this world that are just right precisely because they are not perfect at all, and one such case is the old mill on the banks of the Dronne River. The mill has several cosy salons with massive wooden beams overhead and stone walls hung with classic paintings. The hotel has 15 maze-like rooms spread across three buildings. No two rooms are alike, but all of them are decorated with lavish attention to detail. On sunny days, there is no better place to sit than out on the patio by the river bank, fringed by splendid weeping willows. A boutique hotel with charm and character, albeit without a spa or a concierge. Perfect for romantically inclined guests.
Price range
The hotel managed to preserve the romantic atmosphere of the mill on the river bank. We loved to sit on the terrace close to the river, listening to the gently splashing mill wheel in the background.
You need to plan your journey carefully to fit in a detour to the Périgord. But it is an excursion definitely worthwhile.
