Gastwerk Hotel, Hamburg

Red brick, industrial design, and loft ambience: No other hotel in town captures the spirit of Hamburg more aptly than the "Gastwerk," the name a pun on "Gaswerk," the former gasworks once housed in the same building. Well-known German hotelier Kai Hollmann turned the decommissioned gasworks into "guest works," as it were. Entering the lobby feels as if you were stepping back into the open again. The huge airy hall, 600\_sqm in floor space and five stories high, greets guests with its sheer vastness. Ample enough to store 5,000\_tons of coal, the industrial structure is now criss-crossed by skywalks connecting the various level and building sections. Bright daylight fills the hall, lending a feeling of translucence to the building. While you will encounter exposed brick walls everywhere you go, there is nothing confining about them. Like a stage set, you will also find visual reference points to get your bearings, such as the enormous church clock behind the reception, its hands permanently stopped at five to twelve. This charismatic 4-star hotel stages its harmonious blend of new design with period architecture in amazing ways.
Price range
In the art studio of Georgios Engonidis (Giorgio), you cannot only acquire artwork but also experience it first-hand by getting active.
The location – well off the beaten track! You should have a soft spot for the Altona borough in the west of Hamburg, or find another good reason to stay here for several days.
